About the Department The Archives and Rare Books Library holds the University's Rare Books, University Archives, Local Government Records, Urban Studies Collections, and German-Americana collections. The Archives and Rare Books Library is located on the 8th floor of Blegen Library on the University of Cincinnati's uptown campus. During the 2021-2022 academic year, ARB served more than 600 users via in-person appointments, phone, and email reference. ARB serves the University of Cincinnati faculty, students, and staff along with researchers and members of the general public from around the world. ARB faculty and staff teach and co-teach with faculty from a variety of disciplines using the archival and rare book collections. Job Overview Full-time tenure-track faculty appointment responsible for implementing and managing the University of Cincinnati Records Management Program, appraisal and processing of university archives-related collections, reference and outreach. The individual in this position is responsible for the ongoing development, implementation and management of a comprehensive, campus-wide, records management program according to best practices. Receives general direction from and reports to the head of the Archives & Rare Books Library (ARB). Essential Functions • Manages the University of Cincinnati Records Management Program, which includes the implementation and maintenance of a records management policy, retention schedules, audit compliance, and workflows. • Appraises records and manages the acquisition, accessioning, and de-accessioning of University records. • Provides instructional classes for Libraries and University personnel in records management standards and practices. • Serves as liaison and consults with faculty and staff throughout the University of Cincinnati on matters concerning records management and record retention schedules, including training workshops and online publications and instruction. • Assists in transfer of University Archives materials; develops, implements, and maintains automated systems for access to records, schedules and selected University records. • Describes, preserves, and makes accessible University records of enduring historical value; creates EAD and DACS-compliant finding aids, subject guides, online exhibitions, and other means of discovery for materials related to the University in accordance with accepted archival standards. • Provides reference service for University records as needed. • Assists in maintaining ARB collection databases, including collection descriptions, images, and documents. • Supervises students working on University Archives collections as needed. • Promotes University Archives collections and programs through blog posts and social media. • Provides oral and written reports as directed. • Participates in appropriate meetings, committees and organizations related to the duties and responsibilities of the department, and in support of UC Libraries programs and organizations. Required Education Masters degree in library science or information science from an ALA-accredited institution with a demonstrated understanding of records management, or a graduate degree in a related field. Required Experience • Knowledge of descriptive archival and cataloging principles, metadata standards, and Encoded Archival Description (EAD); experience working with archival content management systems, such as ArchivesSpace. • General knowledge of standards-based metadata schema, including the Extended Dublin Core metadata schema. • Demonstrated experience in providing exceptional customer service. • Understanding of and engagement with the theory and practice of collection development; preservation and conservation; records management protocols and procedures, including electronic information and record keeping systems. • Familiarity with professional reference services and research practices in an archival setting for professional, student and community researchers. • Demonstrated record of ongoing professional development and contribution, and ability to meet UC Libraries reappointment, promotion and tenure requirements. • Ability to think analytically, to use effective verbal and written communication, including the use of computer technology, and to remember details and concentrate on tasks. Additional Qualifications Considered • Additional graduate degree in a related field. • Bibliographic knowledge in a language other than English. • Familiarity with digital collection architecture and infrastructure and current standards for born digital collections. • Experience using Adobe Photoshop (or similar image editing software). • Working knowledge of or experience with institutional repository or digital collection platforms, such as CONTENTdm, Islandora, DSpace or others. • Familiarity with privacy and copyright issues as they relate to archives and records management, especially within a University setting. • General knowledge in the development and maintenance of web sites. Knowledge and ability to produce and optimize images for the web, including experience with image editing software. • Demonstrated ability to manage a variety of projects and tasks in a complex and dynamic work environment, and to work effectively with all levels of the University community. • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. • Supervisory experience in the hiring, training, and appraisal of the work of student employees.
