Position Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated, technically proficient, and client‑focused Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) Facilitator to join our remote consulting team on a part‑time, flexible basis. In this role you will apply cutting‑edge hazard analysis methodologies, guide multidisciplinary client teams, and help shape safer process designs across a variety of industrial sectors. Key Responsibilities
- Lead and Facilitate PHA Studies: Plan, conduct, and document comprehensive Process Hazard Analyses using methodologies such as What‑If, Checklist, Failure Mode & Effects Analysis (FMEA), HAZOP, HAZID, and Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA). Choose the most appropriate approach based on process complexity and identified hazards.
- Technical Documentation: Draft clear, concise, and technically accurate PHA reports, risk matrices, and recommendation packages. Ensure that all findings are captured in industry‑standard software tools (e.g., PHAPro or comparable platforms).
- Interpret Engineering Drawings: Review and extract critical information from P&IDs, mechanical drawings, process flow diagrams (PFDs), block flow diagrams (BFDs), and electrical schematics to support hazard identification.
- Client Interaction & Training: Serve as a trusted advisor to clients, delivering both virtual and on‑site facilitation sessions. Provide training on PHA techniques, regulatory expectations, and best‑practice safety management.
- Regulatory Compliance: Apply knowledge of relevant standards (NFPA, OSHA, OSHA’s Process Safety Management (PSM), EPA’s Risk Management Plan (RMP), and other regional codes) to ensure that recommendations meet or exceed compliance requirements.
- Team Collaboration: Partner with senior consultants, engineers, and subject‑matter experts to develop integrated safety solutions. Conduct peer reviews of marketing materials, presentations, and technical papers as needed.
- Travel & On‑Site Presence: While the role is primarily remote, be prepared to travel up to 50% of the time—including occasional international assignments—to support client sites, conduct field assessments, and deliver face‑to‑face facilitation.
- Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to streamline the PHA process, suggest enhancements to tools and templates, and contribute to DEKRA’s knowledge repository.
Essential Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or a closely related safety discipline.
- Minimum of five (5) years of hands‑on experience in Process Safety Management (PSM) with a proven track record of facilitating PHAs in industrial settings.
- Formal training and demonstrated proficiency in PHA methodologies and LOPA. Certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional), CFEI (Certificate in Fire and Explosion Investigation), CCPSC (Certified Chemical Process Safety Consultant), or a Professional Engineer (PE) license are strongly preferred.
- Deep familiarity with safety regulations and standards, including NFPA 30, NFPA 70E, OSHA 1910.119, EPA RMP, and applicable fire codes.
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply information from complex engineering drawings and process documentation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated client‑service orientation and the ability to build lasting professional relationships.
- Self‑motivated, capable of independent work, yet comfortable collaborating within multidisciplinary teams.
Preferred Experience & Skills
- Experience in the Oil & Gas, petrochemical, or energy sectors, particularly with high‑hazard processes.
- Knowledge of combustible dust hazards, exothermic reaction safety, and flammable liquid/gas handling.
- Proficiency in PHA software tools (PHAPro, PHAWorks, or similar) and in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel for risk calculations.
- Experience delivering virtual training sessions using platforms such as Zoom, Teams, or Webex.
- Leadership abilities, including mentoring junior consultants and leading cross‑functional workshops.
