Job Overview
We're seeking passionate educators to join our tutoring community as independent contractors, working up to 30 hours per week. As an Online Reading Tutor, you'll be on the front lines of making a real impact on students' educational journeys. This is an exciting opportunity to have a direct, positive impact on students, and we're committed to supporting you every step of the way.
Responsibilities
As an Online Reading Tutor, your key responsibilities will include:
- Conducting virtual tutoring sessions using the BookNook platform – no lesson planning required!
- Managing student behavior and engagement throughout sessions
- Creating a safe, respectful learning environment
- Maintaining positive relationships with students
- Documenting observations for each session in the session notes
Requirements
To be successful in this role, you'll need to meet the following requirements:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be based in the U.S. and have a U.S. mailing address
- Have knowledge of and experience in reading best practices aligned to the research that makes up the science of reading
- Be able to build meaningful connections with students to create a motivating and encouraging environment
- Have creativity and flexibility to meet students where they are
- Have experience teaching/tutoring K-8 students, which may include, but is not limited to:
- Having a current/previous teaching license
- Serving as a substitute teacher or teaching assistant
- Paraprofessional, professor, instructor, AND/OR tutoring for another tutoring company
- Classroom experience is preferred
- Online teaching/tutoring experience is preferred
- Completed or enrolled in a teacher credential program is preferred
- Have access to a computer, webcam, and reliable, high-speed internet connection with a speed of at least 10mbps
Our Hiring Process
We're committed to making our hiring process as smooth and efficient as possible. Here's an overview of what you can expect:
- Apply: Submit an application online and receive a decision within 1-2 business days
- Interview: Applicants invited to our one-way interview round will be asked to submit videos answering questions designed to help us evaluate their experience and educational knowledge. The interview portion is designed to be completed in less than 30 minutes, similar to a face-to-face interview
- Hiring Decision: After the interview round, our team will notify applicants within 5 business days of the decision to move forward with the onboarding process
- Onboarding: Applicants selected for onboarding will be asked to complete:
- A paid certification course about the BookNook platform
- One or more state-required, fingerprint-based background checks, which can take up to 2-6 weeks depending on the state/district background check requirements
- Qualified: Upon successful completion of onboarding, Tutors can access our Tutor Portal, where all available appointments will be listed.

Remote Work Environment
We're proud to offer a remote work environment that allows you to work from the comfort of your own home. As an Online Reading Tutor, you'll have the flexibility to work up to 30 hours per week, with sessions held only on weekdays (no weekends) and can be before school, during school, or after school.
Compensation and Benefits
We offer a competitive salary of $20 per hour ($10 per 30-minute session) and a range of benefits to support your success, including:
