About Data Elevates: Data Elevates (DE) is a social enterprise building modern data systems and skills in underserved communities around the world. We work with social impact organizations, educational institutions, and individuals to strengthen capacity for data use and data-driven decision making. Our team works with governments and social impact partners in three primary areas: 1) community data skills training programs, 2) organizational development for data use, and 3) product development. Our work is cross-sectional, in that we support health, food systems, education, and other program areas through our focus on data-driven decision making, and we work on both international and US-based programs. We foster sustainable impact through improved use of data, and to foster people through a supportive, mutually-beneficial environment.
About NSF Advancing Informal STEM Learning (AISL): AISL is a National Science Foundation (NSF) research project awarded to DE. DE’s AISL project, entitled “Broadening Participation of Veterans in the STEM Workforce through Service Learning”, aims to determine how effectively service learning may be used, particularly through an online environment, to support veterans in STEM learning, leading to improved economic potential and job outcomes. Along with overall project management, DE leads the intervention itself, entitled the Impacting Communities Through Data (ICTD) program. This data skills program focuses on service learning projects, complemented by workshops, with all sessions held virtually. Through the service learning projects, veterans build data literacy and visualization skills by implementing actual, community-focused projects for local nonprofits and public agencies. The ICTD program is anticipated to support up to 200 California-based veterans across six, six week long cohorts through its duration. Research for the project, led by our key partner, the University of Houston, focuses on the impact of the ICTD program on veteran participants.
Consultant Role Summary: DE seeks a highly motivated Data Skills Trainer to lead and facilitate the final two cohorts of the ICTD program, under the NSF AISL project. This will also include managing participant learning and supporting program refinement. (We estimate 50-90 people, in total, will participate in these cohorts.)
The consultant will facilitate virtual ICTD workshops focused on data literacy, analysis, and visualization; support participant engagement and progress monitoring, and coordinate adjustments with DE staff. In terms of virtual sessions, each six week cohort includes:
• Seven data skills workshops, each 1.5 hours
• Weekly virtual office hours
• Four guest speaker sessions, each 1 hour
After the first of the two, the consultant will collaborate closely with the Principal Investigator (PI), the Project Coordinator, and the Program Improvement Lead to refine curriculum materials, workshop structure, and facilitation approaches based on feedback.
The Data Skills Trainer will handle a variety of activities, including: workshop presentations, cohort discussion facilitation, workshop activity management, and collaboration with the PI and the Project Coordinator to support each cohort.
As Data Elevates has led four previous ICTD program cohorts, all workshop materials, activities, facilitation guides, and other resources have already been developed, with only minor adjustments needed based on feedback.
