Illustrator Wanted for Simple, Heartfelt Children’s Book on Grief

Remote Full-time
About the Project I am the founder of The Little Wind Phone Project ( a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to creating peaceful, healing spaces for grief support. We are developing a children’s book about grief—a gentle, honest, and comforting story that helps kids understand and process loss in a healthy way. The book features a recurring character (a capybara!) and a simple, warm visual style. The tone is tender, slightly quirky, and accessible for children ages 5–10. What We’re Looking For I’m seeking an illustrator who can bring emotional depth to simple drawings. The aesthetic should be minimalist, with a strong use of white space, intentional visual quietness, and illustrations that support (rather than overpower) the text. This will not be a fully illustrated, full-bleed picture book. Most pages will include: - A small vignette or spot illustration - A single character or simple scene - Clean lines, limited color palette - Space for the words to breathe Think: gentle, expressive, understated — not busy or heavily detailed. Responsibilities - Create character concepts (especially the capybara protagonist) - Produce approximately 15-20 spot illustrations - Provide simple background elements as needed - Format illustrations for a standard 32–40 page children’s book layout - Deliver final artwork in high-resolution print-ready files - Collaborate on mood, tone, and visual storytelling - Incorporate feedback from grief professionals and educators Ideal Skills & Style - Experience illustrating for children ages 5–10 - Ability to convey emotion with simplicity - Gentle, warm, expressive linework - Minimalist or modern picture-book style - Comfortable illustrating themes of grief with sensitivity - Open to collaboration and feedback - Familiarity with designing for print and bleed/safe areas Budget - Open to proposals. Please include your rate for the entire project with full commercial rights for nonprofit use. Include cost for additional per page illustrations. Note: This is a nonprofit-funded project, but we value creative work and will compensate fairly. To Apply, please send: - Your portfolio (children’s work preferred) - A brief note about why you’re interested - Estimated pricing - Your availability and timeline - Any relevant experience with sensitive subject matter (not required but helpful) Apply tot his job
